SHARP update ... January 2007
Although 11 out of the 12 days we were awarded in November and December 2006
were plagued
by terrible weather, we were lucky enough to get
excellent weather on our very last night. We
performed our first 450μm SHARP observations that night, and our key results include:
- The first 450 μm polarization map of an extragalactic source -- the starburst galaxy NGC253.
- 450μm observations of Orion (OMC-1). The position angles are in excellent agreement with
the Hertz data at 350μm.
- A signal-to-noise analysis on NGC253 data confirms that our polarization errors are consistent with photon noise, just as they were at 350μm
- Confirmation of the 450μm beamsize (10 - 11'')
- Polarization efficiency measurements (~98%)
- The polarization induced by the telescope is unchanged from our
July 2006 observing run (~0.3-0.5%). The polarization induced by
the SHARP optics is ~0.4-0.5%.
